When packing your Hajj bag, knowing on which day and for which rite each product will be useful helps you prepare fully without carrying unnecessary weight. The list below summarises the products our customers need most, according to when they are used.

The time spent in ihram during Hajj is often much longer than on Umrah. Those performing Hajj al-Tamattu leave ihram after their Umrah and enter ihram again on the Day of Tarwiyah, while in Hajj al-Ifrad and Hajj al-Qiran, ihram lasts until Eid. Throughout this time, the heat, sweat and crowds make it inevitable that your ihram will get dirty. That is why having at least two sets of ihram, that is, two izars and two ridas, makes things much easier for male pilgrims.

When choosing an ihram, it is best to opt for breathable cotton fabrics with a towelling texture that do not make you sweat. An ihram belt, used to secure the cloth at the waist, both stops it from slipping and keeps your passport, money and cards safe in its zipped pockets. For female pilgrims, modest, light-coloured, thin and comfortably cut clothing is recommended; women are not required to wear any special garment in ihram, and the face and hands remain uncovered.

The standing at Arafat (wuquf) is the most important pillar of Hajj and is spent all day in the open air or in tents. When the sun sets on the Day of Arafah, pilgrims move on to Muzdalifah and spend the night there, often in the open. For the night at Muzdalifah, a light, foldable mat or ground sheet, a thin blanket and a small pillow make a big difference to your comfort. It also helps to keep water and light snacks within reach throughout the night.

The pebbles needed for the stoning of the Jamarat are usually collected at Muzdalifah. A small drawstring pebble pouch is a practical way to carry the pebbles in an orderly way without losing them. A neck or waist bag that leaves your hands free in the crowds makes every transfer easier, from Arafat all the way to Mina.

Although conditions vary with the season, in most years Hajj is performed in high temperatures. During the hours spent under the sun at Arafat and Mina, on the walk to the Jamarat and during tawaf, the body loses fluid quickly. A light-coloured umbrella, towels that cool you down when soaked in water, a portable hand fan and a water bottle are the simplest yet most effective precautions against heatstroke.

Since men in ihram are not permitted to cover their heads, an umbrella is the main way to shield yourself from the sun. If you use sun protection, you should choose unscented products that comply with the restrictions of ihram. Drinking water frequently throughout the day, replacing the salts you lose and resting in the shade at midday are just as important as these products.

The stoning of the Jamarat, which begins on the first day of Eid, involves long walks back and forth between the tents at Mina and the Jamarat throughout the days of tashreeq. During these days, you should have with you water, the medicines you take regularly, your phone and charger, your ID card, a small towel and your pebble pouch. A light, water-resistant bag that spreads the weight across both shoulders lets you carry the load evenly.

In the crowds, it is important for your safety to keep your bag in front of you and to choose one with zipped compartments. Gathering the items you will need back at the tent in a separate pouch helps you keep a small space tidy.

While in ihram, applying fragrance and using scented soap or shampoo are prohibited. Because the days spent in ihram during Hajj are long, it is important to meet your hygiene needs in line with the rules of ihram. Unscented soap, unscented shampoo, unscented wet wipes and unscented moisturiser keep you clean and let you stay comfortable without breaking the restrictions of ihram.

To prevent the chafing and rubbing that long walks can cause, we recommend carrying unscented powder or cream and, for foot care, spare socks and soft socks. Sets that bring all these products together in one pack save you time when packing your bag.

Fragrance cannot be used while in ihram; however, once pilgrims leave ihram, alcohol-free perfume oils, musk and oud are among their favourite products. Pilgrims who have their heads shaved on the day of Eid and come out of ihram can use these fragrances once they have washed. Burning incense at home on your return and welcoming guests with a pleasant scent is also a much-loved part of the Hajj tradition.

To avoid any confusion with the rules of ihram, we recommend carrying alcohol-free perfume oils in a separate pocket from your ihram items. Incense and incense burner sets, meanwhile, are mostly chosen as gifts.

The type of Hajj you perform directly affects how long you remain in ihram and, therefore, what you need to pack. The table below summarises how the period in ihram and the key needs change across the three types of Hajj. In all three types, the days at Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina follow the same pattern, so a mat, a pebble pouch, heat-protection products and a daily bag are needs shared by every pilgrim.

For older pilgrims, products that make long walks easier are especially important. Soft slippers and soft socks with non-slip soles, a folding stool or seat cushion, a pill organiser and a small water flask top this list. If a wheelchair is needed, you should let your consultant know at the planning stage of your Hajj programme.

For female pilgrims, light-coloured, thin and loose-fitting clothing, non-slip under-scarves and headscarves, and a small shoulder bag are recommended. Bags with several compartments that are easy to carry in crowded areas help with both organisation and security. Preparing a separate unscented care bag for personal needs also makes the days of Hajj much easier.

Most Hajj programmes include a few days in Madinah before or after Hajj. Since the days in Madinah are spent out of ihram, everyday clothes, comfortable shoes, and a small prayer mat and prayer beads for your visits to the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) are all you need. A light backpack makes things easier when you visit the blessed Rawdah and go on visits to Uhud, Quba and Qiblatayn.

If you plan to buy dates on your way back from Madinah, a sturdy storage container and some space set aside in your suitcase are useful. As Madinah can cool down in the evenings, we also recommend packing a light cardigan.

The most important criterion when choosing Hajj essentials is whether a product can stand up to long use in demanding conditions. For ihram, the deciding factors are the weight of the fabric, how well it breathes and how quickly it dries after washing; for bags, the quality of the zips, the strength of the stitching and the comfort of the straps; and for mats, how light they are and how much space they take up when folded.

With unscented care products, you need to check that the label confirms the product genuinely contains no fragrance; “lightly scented” products are not suitable for ihram.
