How Does Preparing for Hajj Differ from Preparing for Umrah?

• Duration: The Hajj journey is much longer than Umrah; you will need large sizes and spares of your care products, and at least two ihram sets.
• Open air: The wuquf at Arafat and the night at Muzdalifah are spent in the open air, so a light mat, a shawl and a sleep set become important.
• Heat: Temperatures can be very high during the Hajj season. As men in ihram cannot cover their heads, an umbrella, a cooling towel and a misting fan bring great relief.
• Moving around: During the days in Mina, your main luggage stays at the hotel or in the tent; you will need a light bag to carry with you, a pebble pouch and a neck wallet.

Ihram Prohibitions and Hajj Essentials

As the period in ihram on Hajj can be longer than on Umrah, choosing products that comply with the ihram prohibitions is all the more important. While in ihram, applying fragrance to the body or to the ihram cloths is prohibited, as is men wearing stitched clothing or covering their heads. That is why it is recommended that care products be unscented, that men use an umbrella rather than a head covering to protect themselves from the sun, and that the ihram be secured with a belt rather than a pin. The High Council of Religious Affairs of Diyanet (Türkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs) states that scented soap used for cleaning does not require a penalty, while still recommending unscented products.

For products such as sunscreen and lip balm, we recommend choosing unscented versions and consulting your group's religious guide whenever you are unsure. Applying a pleasant fragrance before entering ihram, on the other hand, is recommended (mustahab); you can use our Hajj fragrances for this purpose.

Protect Yourself in the Heat

Daytime temperatures can climb very high during the Hajj season. Drink plenty of water, try to stay in the shade in the middle of the day, choose light-coloured, breathable clothing and reapply sunscreen regularly. An umbrella and a cooling towel bring great relief, especially during the wuquf at Arafat and on the way to the Jamarat. Preparing for Hajj as a Woman

On Hajj, too, women enter ihram in their normal modest clothing, with the face and hands left uncovered. As clothes will be washed often throughout the long Hajj journey, quick-drying, loose, light-coloured clothing, a spare headscarf and under-scarf cap, slipper socks with non-slip soles and tawaf socks are the products women pilgrims need most. Since you will stay in tents at Mina and Arafat, keeping your personal care products, wet wipes and a change of clothes in a small bag with you makes things more comfortable. It is also recommended that women pilgrims carry an ID card holder and their contact details with them so that they do not get separated from the group at busy times.

Elderly Pilgrims and Their Companions

Hajj is an act of worship that our older loved ones have also long awaited. If you are travelling as a companion, preparing a folding stool, light shoes with ergonomic soles, a neck pillow and an easy-to-carry bag for your relative will make the journey easier. Bearing in mind that places to sit and rest may be limited at Arafat and Muzdalifah, it is useful to have a light mat and a shawl with you. It is important to carry regularly used medicines in sufficient quantities together with their prescriptions, and to consult a doctor about your relative's health before the journey.

Planning Your Luggage

On the Hajj journey, dividing your luggage into two makes things easier: a main suitcase that stays at the hotel, and a light bag that you carry with you during the days at Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah. In the day bag, you can pack a spare ihram, unscented care products, wet wipes, a shawl, a pebble pouch, an umbrella, a water bottle and photocopies of your documents. As airline baggage rules and permitted liquid quantities vary from airline to airline, check your ticket conditions before you travel, and spread your care products sensibly between cabin sizes and large sizes. Leaving room in your suitcase for gifts, or ordering gifts before your return so that they are waiting for you at home, is also a practical solution.

Trying Things Out and Breaking Them In Before You Travel

Break in your new sandals and slipper socks by wearing them for a few days before the journey; remember that you will walk many kilometres throughout Hajj. Washing and drying your ihram once helps soften the fabric. Try out the fit of your ihram belt and the layout of its pockets in advance, and decide which pocket you will use for your passport, phone and money. Checking at home that products such as the umbrella, fan and flask work properly will spare you surprises once you are there.

A Small Bag for the Day of Arafah

The wuquf at Arafat is the most important pillar of Hajj, and the day is spent in prayer and worship.
