In other words, choosing unscented products is the simplest way to keep your worship free from doubt and to remove the question “might a penalty be due?” from the outset. Diyanet sources also explain that deliberately applying fragrance may, depending on the amount applied, have consequences such as a dam (sacrifice) or charity equal to the fitrah amount. Creams and oils call for particular care: according to Diyanet's guidance, applying cream or oil for adornment while in ihram may require a penalty, whereas nothing is required for creams and ointments applied as medical treatment. What Should Be in an Unscented Care Bag?

• Unscented liquid soap and shampoo: The products in hotel bathrooms are mostly perfumed; carrying your own bottle is the safest option.
• Unscented bar soap: It takes up little space, is not caught by liquid rules and lasts a long time.
• Unscented wet wipes: The first product you should have to hand during tawaf, sa'i and coach journeys. Cologne-soaked wipes are not suitable for the days in ihram.
• Unscented sunscreen: In Makkah and Madinah the sun is strong for most of the year; plan ahead for the hours you spend outdoors.
• Unscented roll-on: It helps you feel fresh in hot, crowded places; perfumed deodorants should not be used during the days in ihram.
• Unscented detergent: A small bottle is enough for washing your ihram garments or underwear in the sink.
• Unscented lip balm: Dry air and air-conditioned rooms dry out the lips; instead of flavoured products, choose a stick with no added flavour.

What to Look for When Choosing Unscented Products

The first rule is to read the label. If the ingredient list includes “parfum”, “fragrance”, “aroma” or “essence”, the product is not a suitable choice for the days in ihram. Phrases such as “lightly scented”, “fresh scent” or “with natural essences” do not mean unscented either. Unscented products may have a very faint scent of their own that comes from their raw materials; this is not added perfume. The second rule is size. Many airports apply a limit of 100 ml per container to liquids in cabin baggage; it is therefore practical to carry bottles of 100 ml or less in your cabin bag and larger sizes, such as 250 ml, in your main suitcase. Remember to confirm the current rule with your airline before your flight. The third rule is packaging: bottles with secure lids, screw caps or locking tops reduce the risk of leaks when the air pressure changes. The fourth rule is the length of your stay and the number of people. On an Umrah programme lasting ten to fifteen days, a travel-size set is usually enough for one person; if you are travelling as a family or shower often, consider the large sizes as well. For detergent, one capful per sink wash is usually enough; a 250 ml bottle covers a programme for one person. Sunscreen depends on the area covered and how often you reapply; in the summer months, plan on using a 100 ml tube on your own. The ban on fragrance applies equally to women and men; the differences lie mostly in clothing and in the areas exposed to the sun. Because men's ihram consists of two unstitched white cloths, the shoulders, arms and tops of the feet may stay uncovered all day; for men, planning for sun protection and carrying unscented detergent to keep the cloths clean therefore come first. Women enter ihram in their own clothes; the face and hands remain uncovered, so it is especially important that the products used on the face are unscented. While in ihram, women should also avoid perfumed hand creams, scented hair care products and make-up containing perfume. The shared advice for both groups is this: review your bag before entering ihram, put scented products in a separate compartment of your main suitcase and, during the days in ihram, carry only the bag that contains unscented products. This reduces the chance of absent-mindedly using a scented product.

Common Misconceptions About Unscented Products

People often assume that every product labelled “natural” or “organic” is unscented; yet plant oils and essential oils can also give off a noticeable scent. Likewise, the fact that a product is made for babies does not mean it is fragrance-free; many baby shampoos and baby wipes contain a light perfume. “Alcohol-free” does not mean unscented either; a product without alcohol may still contain essence. Another misconception is that unscented products clean less well. Cleaning is done by a product's cleansing ingredients, not by its scent; perfume only determines the scent you notice during use. • Do not leave sunscreen, roll-on or lip balm in direct sunlight, by a coach window or in a closed vehicle.
• After use, let bar soap dry on a draining soap dish; do not leave wet soap in a closed box for long.
• Close the lid of wet wipe packs after each use; a pack left open dries out quickly in the heat.
• Rinse ihram garments washed with detergent until all the foam is gone, and dry them in a well-ventilated place.
• For hygiene reasons, do not share personal care products, especially lip balm and roll-on, with others.
• If you notice redness, itching or irritation with any product, stop using it; consult a healthcare professional if necessary.

Common Mistakes

• Relying on hotel shampoo: Most of the products in hotel bathrooms are perfumed, and their ingredients are often unclear. Carry your own unscented products with you.
• Not declining offers of cologne: Cologne, a lovely part of Turkish hospitality, should not be applied to the hands and face while in ihram. You can politely decline cologne offered to you on the coach or at the hotel.
• Using cologne-soaked or scented wet wipes: Always check the pack for the words “unscented” or “fragrance-free”.
• Washing ihram garments with scented detergent: According to Diyanet's guidance, use for cleaning does not require a penalty, but unscented detergent is recommended; a small bottle removes this doubt.
• Using flavoured lip balm: Fruit-, vanilla- or mint-flavoured lip balms are not a suitable choice for the days in ihram.
• Putting large bottles in your cabin bag: Liquids over 100 ml may be taken from you at the security check. Pack large sizes in your main suitcase.
• Leaving sun protection to the last minute: Planning ahead before you go out in the sun reduces the sunburn that can happen in the first days.
