Types of prayer beads: which should you choose?

• 99-bead tasbih: The most popular form for reciting the Beautiful Names of Allah (al-Asma al-Husna) and the tasbihat after prayer. It is the most common choice for gifts.
• 33-bead tasbih: Shorter and easy to carry in a pocket. A practical alternative for daily dhikr.
• Scented prayer beads: These carry a light scent such as rose and are especially popular with female guests and at mawlid gatherings. They should not be used while in ihram.

Choosing and caring for a prayer mat

When choosing a prayer mat as a gift, pay attention to three things: size, texture and how easy it is to carry. For use at home, velvet prayer mats measuring about 70 x 110 cm are soft and durable. If the mat will be used while travelling, at work or in the car, thin woven, foldable pocket prayer mats are more practical. Prayer mats that come with a pouch or bag serve both as gift packaging and as a storage bag. For care, simply wash the prayer mat on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees, avoid bleach and dry it on a flat surface. If ironing is needed, iron it on the reverse side at a low temperature. Folding the mat with the patterned side facing inwards reduces dust build-up.

How do you use a miswak?

• Open the vacuum packaging just before use.
• Peel about 1 cm of bark from one end.
• Chew the exposed end for a few minutes until the fibres form a brush.
• Gently clean your teeth from top to bottom and from side to side.
• After use, rinse it and keep it in a case with a lid; when the fibres wear out, cut off the tip and expose a fresh section.

Gift timeline: from ordering to handing out

• 2–3 weeks before your journey: Draw up your guest list and decide on the groups and the budget.
• 1–2 weeks before your journey: Place your order and choose a delivery date when someone will be at home.

What you need to know about dates

Dates are an essential part of the table after Umrah; however, as a food product, they need to be handled with care. At RotaNur, dates are sourced labelled and packaged from registered food businesses and are shipped in their original packaging. The origin, batch number, use-by date and storage conditions are shown on the packaging label. When you receive them, check the label, store the box in a cool, dry place and keep it in the fridge once opened. For hygiene reasons, we recommend putting the dates on a plate only at the moment of serving, and not placing loose dates in gift pouches. For food products, returns apply only to items whose packaging is unopened.

Why isn't Zamzam water sold?

Zamzam water is one of the most frequently asked-about topics after Umrah. RotaNur does not sell Zamzam water and does not add it to gift packs. Saudi Arabia does not permit the sale of Zamzam water for commercial purposes, and in Türkiye, too, cases involving the sale of counterfeit Zamzam have made the news from time to time. Zamzam is a keepsake that travellers bring back themselves, within their own baggage allowance and the airline's rules. If you would like to offer Zamzam to your guests, you can serve the Zamzam you brought back yourself with a suitable serving set. As airlines' rules on carrying Zamzam can differ, we recommend checking with your airline before you travel.

Packing and handing-out tips

• Keep the gifts in separate boxes by group, and do not mix up the ones prepared for close relatives with those for your wider circle.
• Place a basket or tray by the front door so that you can easily hand guests a pouch as they leave.
• Writing your name and the date of your Umrah in the blank space on the prayer cards makes the gift personal.
• Store scented products separately from unscented ones, as the scent can transfer to other items.
• Serve the dates and other treats at the table, not in the same box as the gifts.

• Zamzam products of unknown source: The source of water offered on the market under the Zamzam name is unclear; accept Zamzam only when it has been brought back by travellers you trust.
• Giving everyone the same scent: Scent preferences vary from person to person. Plan scented and unscented items together.

A short note on scented products

Scented gifts such as the rose-scented prayer beads are intended to be handed out after your return. As the guidance of Diyanet (Türkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs) states that applying fragrance to the body or the ihram cloth is forbidden while in ihram, we recommend not using these products for as long as you are in ihram.
