Staying in Madinah: Proximity to the Prophet’s Mosque

At the heart of the days spent in Madinah al-Munawwarah is the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi). You go to the mosque many times a day to perform the five daily prayers in the mosque of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him), to visit the blessed Rawdah (al-Rawdah al-Mutahharah) and to offer your greetings of peace. That is why, in Madinah, the hotel’s distance from the Prophet’s Mosque is the most important criterion for your accommodation.

Unlike in Makkah, most of Madinah’s hotels are concentrated in the central area immediately around the mosque. That is why, in all RotaNur Umrah packages, accommodation in Madinah is in hotels within walking distance of the Prophet’s Mosque; the difference between the packages lies less in distance than in hotel class and the scope of services.

On this page, you will find Madinah’s central hotel area, the Markaziyah (central area), hotel locations relative to the gates of the Prophet’s Mosque, walking times, room types and the types of Madinah accommodation in our packages. For the Makkah side, you can visit our Makkah hotels page.

What Is the Markaziyah Area?

The Markaziyah is the name of the central area that encircles the Prophet’s Mosque and the vast courtyard around it. Most of the city’s hotels, markets and restaurants are located here. The Markaziyah is usually described in sections, according to their direction from the mosque:

SectionLocationKey feature
Northern MarkaziyahNorth side of the Prophet’s MosqueWide streets and many large hotels; close to the gates opening onto the mosque’s northern courtyard
Southern and western MarkaziyahSouth and west sides of the mosqueClose to the old part of the mosque, where the Rawdah is located, and to the markets; busy and lively
Eastern sideEast of the mosque, around Jannat al-BaqiClose to al-Baqi for visits; from some hotels, the mosque is reached through different gates
Outside the MarkaziyahThe neighbourhoods around the central areaQuieter; reaching the mosque requires a longer walk or a vehicle

Because the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque is so large, the side your hotel is on determines which part of the mosque you can reach more easily. For example, walking from a hotel in the north to the southern part of the mosque, where the Rawdah is located, may mean crossing the entire courtyard and the mosque from end to end. In our packages, we state the distance in metres rather than by area name.

Northern Markaziyah

The Northern Markaziyah is the section that faces the northern courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque and where large hotels are concentrated. Thanks to its wide streets and well-kept pavements, getting to the mosque is easy. When you enter the mosque through the gates on the northern side, you can easily reach its spacious prayer areas.

The advantage of staying in this area is that you can leave the hotel and reach the mosque’s courtyard quickly, and the wide entrance areas make it easier to find a place even at crowded prayer times. For a visit to the Rawdah, however, you need to plan a walk towards the southern part of the mosque. Stepping out into the courtyard from the hotels on the northern side, you reach the large sections added during the mosque’s expansions; as these sections also fill up quickly for the Friday and tarawih prayers, it always pays to set off before prayer time.

Southern and Western Markaziyah

The hotel area on the south and west sides of the Prophet’s Mosque stands out for its proximity to the old part of the mosque, where the blessed Rawdah and the Prophet’s blessed chamber (al-Hujrah al-Sharifah) are located. Markets, date and gift shops, and restaurants are concentrated in this area. Busy all day long, this part of the area becomes especially crowded as worshippers leave after prayers.

Jannat al-Baqi, to the east of the mosque, is the historic cemetery where members of the family of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and many of the Companions are buried. From hotels close to the mosque, you can walk to al-Baqi. For the etiquette of the visit and its history, you can read our Jannat al-Baqi article.

Gates of the Prophet’s Mosque and Hotel Location

The Prophet’s Mosque has many gates, and they are numbered. Bab al-Salam, Bab Jibril (Gate of Gabriel), Bab al-Rahmah (Gate of Mercy), Bab Abu Bakr and the King Fahd Gate on the northern side are among the best known. Noting the name and number of the gate nearest your hotel makes it easier to find your way, especially when leaving after prayers.

The giant shade umbrellas that open in the mosque’s courtyard during the day offer protection from the heat; beneath the courtyard are ablution facilities and car parks. Inside the mosque, there are separate prayer sections for women, with their own entrances; the staff at the gates direct female and male visitors to the right sections. On the first day, our guides tour the mosque together with the group to show everyone the gates and meeting points.

For detailed information on the mosque’s history, its expansions and its gates, take a look at our Prophet’s Mosque article.

Distance to the Prophet’s Mosque and Walking Time

The times below are approximate figures for an adult walking at a normal pace on level ground. The distance refers to the route from the hotel’s door to the mosque’s courtyard; moving from the courtyard to the prayer area inside the mosque takes extra time, depending on the crowds.

Hotel’s distance from the mosqueApproximate walkRotaNur package
50-100 metres1-2 minutesPremium Umrah
200-300 metres3-5 minutesLuxury Umrah, walking-distance Umrah and economy Umrah

In Madinah, the hotel is within walking distance of the mosque on all our packages, so you do not need to wait for a shuttle for the daily prayers. Visits around the city, such as Quba, Qiblatayn and Uhud, are made by coach, accompanied by a guide. Another benefit of staying close to the mosque is that you do not have to walk a long way in the dark for the dawn prayer and night worship; especially in the winter months and for elderly guests, this short distance makes the daily programme far more comfortable. Returning to the hotel once the crowd in the courtyard has thinned out after prayers also helps reduce fatigue.

Getting to Madinah: Airport, Coach and High-Speed Train

Depending on your programme’s route, there are two ways of reaching Madinah. On dates that begin in Madinah, you fly directly from Türkiye to Madinah airport; our guide meets you at the airport, and you travel by comfortable coach to your hotel in the Markaziyah. The journey from the airport to the city centre is usually short, depending on traffic.

On dates that begin in Makkah, you travel on to Madinah by road after Umrah and your days in Makkah. The journey of about 450 kilometres is made by comfortable coach, with rest stops along the way; on some dates, the high-speed train between Makkah and Madinah is used. If you arrive by train, the transfer from the station to the hotel is organised by our guide. You can see which city each date begins in from the date table on the product pages.

The Spiritual Atmosphere of Madinah and the Etiquette of Visiting

Madinah is the city to which the Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated and where the Muslim community first took shape. The Prophet said: “A prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers in any other mosque, except Masjid al-Haram” (Bukhari, Muslim). That is why the days in Madinah are spent striving to perform the daily prayers in congregation at the mosque.

Being in a state of ablution when entering Madinah, entering the mosque with the right foot while making supplication, offering greetings of peace in front of the Prophet’s blessed chamber without raising your voice, and taking care not to hurt anyone in the crowd are the core elements of the etiquette of visiting. Staying only briefly in the Rawdah and at the place of greeting also gives other visitors their chance. Having your hotel close to the mosque lets you spread these visits over the day and make them calmly.

Visiting the Rawdah and the Nusuk Appointment

The Rawdah (al-Rawdah al-Mutahharah) is the area between the Prophet’s pulpit (minbar) and his blessed chamber, described in a hadith as “a garden from the gardens of Paradise”. Praying and making supplication in the Rawdah is by appointment only; appointments are issued through Nusuk, Saudi Arabia’s official platform. Separate times and separate entry arrangements apply to male and female visitors.

Having your hotel close to the mosque makes it easier to arrive on time for your appointment and to rest after the visit. Our guides help the guests in our group with their appointment procedures; since appointment slots open according to availability, the Madinah programme is planned flexibly. For the etiquette of the visit and the supplications to recite, you can read our Rawdah supplication article.

How Many Nights Do You Stay in Madinah?

The length of your stay in Madinah depends on the total length of the programme. For example, on 7-day Umrah programmes, guests usually stay 2-3 nights in Madinah; on 10-day and 14-day programmes, the stay in Madinah is longer. Depending on the date, the route begins in Makkah or in Madinah; you can see the starting city for each date in the date table.

Guests who wish to keep up the tradition of performing forty prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque, an intention that requires staying about eight days in Madinah, choose our long-stay Umrah programmes. You can find out the exact number of nights from our advisor when choosing your date.

When planning the days in Madinah, we make sure that the Rawdah appointment, the Friday prayer and the visits around the city are not squeezed into the same day. The first day is set aside for recovering from the journey and getting to know the mosque; visits are usually made in the cool of the morning, while the afternoons are left for worship at the mosque and for rest. Guests whose programme begins in Madinah make their farewell visit on the last day before travelling to Makkah and complete their ihram preparations at the hotel.

Accommodation in Madinah During the Hajj Season

On Hajj programmes, the visit to Madinah takes place before or after the days of Hajj, depending on the group’s plan. Madinah is also very crowded during the Hajj season, so hotels close to the mosque matter even more. Tips for Elderly Guests and Families with Children

Although the hotel is within walking distance of the mosque on all our packages in Madinah, the premium hotels 50-100 metres away make a noticeable difference for guests with limited walking ability. Wheelchairs can be used inside the mosque and in the courtyard; letting us know your needs at registration allows our guide to plan your visits accordingly.

For families with children, being able to get back to the hotel quickly makes midday breaks and rest times easier. Madinah’s calm atmosphere and spacious courtyard also offer children a more comfortable setting than Makkah. When you travel as a family, let us know at registration that you wish to share a room; for dates that coincide with school holidays, take a look at our mid-term school holiday Umrah programmes.
