Ihram and Fragrance: What to Watch Out For

Using fragrance on the Umrah and Hajj journey is subject to certain rules. According to the guidance of Diyanet (Türkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs), applying fragrance to the body, the ihram garments or the bedding of a person in ihram is among the prohibitions of ihram, and applying fragrance to an entire limb requires a penalty (dam). By contrast, applying a pleasant fragrance before entering ihram is recommended (mustahab); there is no harm in the scent that remains on the body after entering ihram.

• Use your attar before making the intention for ihram, after ghusl or wudu.
• While in ihram, do not use attar, perfume, scented creams or scented wet wipes; choose unscented, ihram-friendly care products instead.
• Do not apply attar to the ihram garments; according to the Hanafi school, applying fragrance to clothing is not considered permissible.
• After leaving ihram, you can freely use your attar for your prayers in Makkah and Madinah and on Fridays and Eid days.
