Ihram Restrictions and Choosing Your Items

Ihram is an obligatory element (fard) of Umrah, and from the moment you enter ihram certain actions become forbidden. According to the guidance of Diyanet (Türkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs), applying fragrance to one's body, ihram cloth or bedding, and, for men, wearing stitched clothing and covering the head are among the ihram restrictions. Women, on the other hand, enter ihram in their normal modest clothing; they do not cover their faces or hands.

These rules have a direct impact on your shopping list. Your care products should be unscented, men should choose seamless ihram and slippers that leave the top of the foot uncovered, and women should opt for comfortable modest clothing rather than sets with a face veil. Diyanet's High Board of Religious Affairs states that scented soap used for cleaning does not require any penalty, while still recommending unscented products. Applying a pleasant fragrance before entering ihram, on the other hand, is recommended (mustahab); this is why attars are part of Umrah preparation.

It is also worth remembering that fastening the ihram with pins or clips is considered disliked (makruh) in the Hanafi school. Using an ihram belt instead of pins to keep your ihram from slipping is both a practical and a cautious choice.

Practical Tips for Makkah and Madinah

• Keep your shoes with you: Finding shoes you left at the gates of the Haram can be difficult in the crowds; a drawstring shoe bag solves this problem.
• Be prepared for the heat: Sunscreen, a water bottle and light-coloured, breathable clothing are lifesavers, especially in the summer months.
• Keep your valuables close to your body: A zipped ihram belt or a neck wallet keeps your passport and money safe.
• Carry spares: Having a spare ihram, a spare pair of tawaf socks and spare care products gives you peace of mind throughout the journey.
• Start light: Leave room in your suitcase, bearing in mind that you will buy most of your gifts towards the end of your trip.

Differences Between Umrah Essentials for Women and Men

Men's Umrah preparation is shaped around the ihram: two seamless cloths, a belt that holds the ihram in place, and slippers or sandals that leave the top of the foot and the heel uncovered. After coming out of ihram, breathable muslin sets, thobes and long tunics offer comfortable wear in Makkah and Madinah. There is no separate ihram garment for women; modest, loose, light-coloured clothing that does not make you sweat is sufficient. Preparing for Umrah by Season

During Ramadan Umrah periods, the crowds grow and worship hours get longer; a light pocket prayer mat, comfortable tawaf socks and a water bottle you can keep with you are especially useful at this time. In the summer months, when temperatures are high, cotton and muslin fabrics, unscented sunscreen and plenty of water are the priorities. In winter and during the mid-year school holidays, evenings in Makkah and Madinah can turn cool, so it is wise to take a light cardigan or shawl to wear after coming out of ihram. Whatever the season, choosing cabin-size, unscented care products and breaking in your shoes by wearing them for a few days before the journey are important for a comfortable Umrah.

Preparing for Your Visit to Madinah

Most Umrah programmes also include a few days in Madinah al-Munawwarah. As the ihram restrictions do not apply in Madinah, you can use your attars with peace of mind and wear more relaxed clothing. At the Prophet's Mosque, too, shoes are left at the door, so a shoe bag will come in handy once again. A Brief Reminder for Entering Ihram

Before entering ihram, you trim your nails and moustache and attend to personal hygiene, perform ghusl or wudu and, if you wish, apply a pleasant fragrance. Men wrap one piece of the ihram around the waist to cover the lower body and drape the other over the shoulders; the ihram belt secures the cloth at the waist and carries your belongings. Two rak'ahs of ihram prayer are then performed, the intention for Umrah is made and the talbiyah is recited. From this moment, the ihram restrictions begin. For those travelling by air, the miqat boundary is crossed during the flight, so it may be necessary to enter ihram at the airport or on the plane; that is why it is important to carry your ihram in your cabin bag. • Ihram size: The standard 110x220 cm size suits most adult men. If you are tall or broad-built, choose the larger 115x230 cm size.
• Ihram belt: Utility-style belts adjust to your waist size with their clip buckle, while fabric belts are lighter thanks to their elasticated design.
• Women's clothing: For prayer dresses and abayas, check the size chart on the product page; choosing one size up is often more comfortable and gives you more freedom of movement.
• Sandals and slippers: Adjustable hook-and-loop models give you some leeway if your feet swell; wear new footwear for a few days before you set off.
