Umrah Packing List: 30 Things to Put in Your Suitcase

When preparing for an Umrah journey, one of the most frequently asked questions is what should go in the suitcase and what should stay at home. This Umrah packing list brings together, sorted into categories, the 30 essential items you will need, from documents to ihram and from unscented toiletries to electronics. If you go through the list a few weeks before your journey and sort out anything missing in good time, you will be able to focus on your worship with a much calmer mind. Some items may vary depending on the programme of the Umrah tours you join; even so, the list below is a solid starting point for most travellers.

Where Should You Start Preparing for Umrah?

It is best to start your preparations with the documents, because procedures such as the passport, visa and vaccinations take time and cannot be left until the last day. Once the documents are in order, you can prepare your ihram, clothing and health kit. In the final week, you should check your electronics, your items for worship and the weight of your suitcase.

Umrah Packing List: A 30-Item Checklist

The list below is divided into eight categories. Ticking off each item as you put it in your suitcase is the most practical way to avoid forgetting anything.

Documents and Paperwork

1. Passport: It must have sufficient validity from the date of travel. As the minimum period required can change, confirm the current requirement before you travel.
2. Visa document: Keep a printout of your electronically issued visa, as well as a copy on your phone.
3. Vaccination card: Saudi Arabia requires Umrah visitors to have been vaccinated against meningococcal disease (ACYW). Confirm the current status of the vaccination and other health requirements with Türkiye’s General Directorate of Health for Border and Coastal Areas, and keep your vaccination card together with your passport.
4. Flight ticket and accommodation details: Take the hotel address, your guide’s contact details and your flight details with you, both in print and in digital form.
5. Photocopies of documents: Keep photocopies of your passport and visa in a separate place from the originals; if anything is lost, they will speed up the procedures.

Ihram and Clothing

6. Men’s ihram: It consists of two unstitched pieces: the izar, which covers the body from the waist down, and the rida, which covers the shoulders. Breathable, quick-drying fabrics are a good choice.
7. Ihram belt: It holds the izar in place, and its pockets make it easier to carry small items such as money, cards and your phone.
8. Spare ihram: Having a second set in case the first one gets dirty or wet gives you peace of mind.
9. Modest, comfortable clothing for women: Loose-fitting dresses or tunic sets that do not reveal the shape of the body and do not feel stifling in the heat, together with a few headscarves, are sufficient.
10. Everyday clothes and underwear: Depending on the length of your stay, take light cotton clothing and enough socks and underwear.
11. A light cardigan or shawl: Useful in the air-conditioned interiors of mosques and hotels, or on cool evenings.

Shoes and Slippers

12. Ihram-appropriate slippers or sandals: Men in ihram must wear slippers or sandals that leave the heels and the protruding bone on the top of the foot uncovered. Choose a lightweight pair with non-slip soles.
13. Comfortable walking shoes: For the long walks after leaving ihram and during visits in Madinah, choose a pair you have already broken in.
14. Shoe bag: It lets you keep your shoes with you in the mosques and saves you from wasting time looking for them on the way out.

Unscented Personal Care Products

15. Unscented soap and shampoo: As applying fragrance is among the ihram restrictions, choose perfume-free products.
16. Unscented moisturiser and anti-chafing cream: Helpful against the friction and irritation that long walks can cause.
17. Toothbrush, toothpaste and miswak: Since it is a sensible precaution to avoid products with a noticeable scent while in ihram, a miswak is a practical alternative.
18. Nail clippers and grooming kit: As cutting the nails is prohibited while in ihram, take care of this before you enter ihram; bear in mind the cabin baggage rules for sharp items.

Health Kit

19. Medication you take regularly: Carry enough to last the whole journey, in the original packaging and, if possible, together with a prescription or a doctor’s report.
20. Basic first aid supplies: Plasters, sterile gauze, blister tape and the basic medicines your doctor recommends.
21. Face masks, wet wipes and hand sanitiser: They help you maintain hygiene in crowded places; for ihram, choose unscented ones.

Electronics

22. Plug adaptor: In Saudi Arabia, three-pin Type G sockets and a 220-volt mains supply are commonly used. You will need a suitable adaptor for plugs from Türkiye.
23. Power bank: It helps you keep your phone on all day for maps, the Nusuk app and staying in touch. Under airline rules, power banks generally have to be carried in cabin baggage.
24. Phone, charging cable and earphones: Indispensable for supplication and Quran apps, for keeping in touch with your guide and for emergencies.

Prayer and Worship Items

25. Travel prayer mat: A thin, foldable prayer mat makes things easier when you pray in the hotel or in a mosque courtyard.
26. Prayer beads (tasbih): A light set of prayer beads that you can use for remembrance (dhikr) and glorification (tasbih).
27. Pocket supplication book: A small booklet containing supplications that can be recited during tawaf, sa’i and the visit to Madinah. Supplications are not limited to set formulas; you may also worship with the supplications you already know.

Everyday Items

28. Waist bag: It keeps your passport, money and phone close to your body and safe, and leaves your hands free in the crowds.
29. Umbrella or hat: Important for protection from the sun. As men in ihram cannot cover their heads, an umbrella is the more suitable option for them.
30. Water bottle: A light, refillable bottle makes it easier to meet your need for water during the day.

What Should You Consider When Choosing Items for Ihram?

Since certain actions are prohibited in the state of ihram, the items you choose should also take these restrictions into account. Scented products, clothes sewn to the shape of the body (for men) and anything that covers the head fall within this scope. The soundest approach in your preparations is to follow the explanations in the Hajj and Umrah publications of Diyanet (Türkiye’s Presidency of Religious Affairs).

Choosing ihram for men

Men wear nothing other than two unstitched pieces of cloth while in ihram, so the fabric, size and belt of the ihram are important. Very thin fabrics may not cover the body adequately, while very thick ones can be tiring in the heat. Once you have a good-quality ihram set together with a suitable belt and slippers, the most important part of your preparation is done.

What should women wear in ihram?

There is no special ihram garment for women; they enter ihram in loose, clean clothing that meets the requirements of Islamic modest dress. The face must be left uncovered while in ihram. As for footwear, women are not subject to a restriction like the one that applies to men.

Does using an umbrella breach the ihram restrictions?

According to Diyanet’s explanations, there is no harm in a person in ihram shading themselves with an umbrella, because an umbrella is not considered a covering that touches the head. What is prohibited is for men to cover their heads with a hat, a cap or anything similar. During the hours when the sun is strongest, an umbrella is the most practical solution for men in ihram.

Suitcases, Zamzam and Airline Rules

The most common mistake when packing your suitcase is not leaving room for the gifts you will bring back. Leaving part of your suitcase empty on the way out reduces the risk of running into excess baggage problems on the return journey. Baggage allowance, cabin baggage dimensions and weight limits vary depending on the airline and the ticket type; check this information on your ticket and in the airline’s official sources.

Can Zamzam water be carried in your suitcase?

The rules for carrying Zamzam differ from airline to airline. In many cases, Zamzam has to be checked in separately, in sealed, leak-proof packaging and limited to a specific quantity. Before putting water in your suitcase yourself, be sure to ask about the current rules of the airline operating your flight.

• Pack liquids in line with the cabin baggage rules.
• Place fragile items between your clothes.
• Attach a label to your suitcase with your name and contact details.
• Always keep your documents and medication in your cabin baggage.

What Should You Not Take for Umrah?

When going for Umrah, it is best to leave at home any items that add unnecessary weight, conflict with the ihram restrictions or might fall foul of entry rules. Valuable jewellery, scented products and items that may require a permit top this list. As the products that are prohibited from entering Saudi Arabia or subject to permission can change, confirm the current conditions before you travel.

• Valuable jewellery and large amounts of cash: They increase the risk of loss and theft in the crowds.
• Perfume and scented cosmetics: They cannot be used while in ihram; a small-sized product is enough for after you have left ihram.
• More clothes than you need: A light suitcase gives you greater freedom of movement; for longer stays, you can ask in advance about laundry facilities.
• Certain medicines carried without a prescription: Some active ingredients may be restricted in other countries; do not take such medicines with you without a prescription or a medical report.
• Drones and similar devices: These devices require special permission in many countries, so leaving them at home is the safest choice.
• Unnecessary sharp and pointed tools: They can cause problems in cabin baggage; it is best not to take any that you will not need.

Final Check Before You Set Off

Before closing your suitcase, go through the list once more. Make sure your passport, visa printout, vaccination card, medication and charging equipment are in your hand luggage. If you are travelling straight to Makkah, you may need to enter ihram at the airport or on the plane, before the miqat boundary is crossed; so keep your ihram in your cabin baggage where you can reach it easily. Packing Notes for Umrah Travellers in the 2026–2027 Season

The contents of your suitcase differ in small but important ways depending on the month in which you go for Umrah. The Umrah season, which resumed after the 2026 Hajj, offers varying climate and crowd conditions from autumn through to Ramadan. The table below summarises what you should prioritise adding to your 30-item list in each period. As hotels and flights fill up early during the semester holiday and Ramadan, it is also wise not to leave your packing until the final week.

Get your phone ready as well as your suitcase

The visit to the Rawdah (ar-Rawdah al-Mutahharah) is made by an appointment booked through the Nusuk app, and limits may be placed on how often appointments can be made. Installing the app before your journey and going over how to use it with your guide will save you time in Madinah. If you will be travelling between Makkah and Madinah on the Haramain High-Speed Railway, ask in advance how your luggage will be transported. Freeing up space on your phone and storing images of your passport and visa so that you can open them even without an internet connection will also make things easier.
